Some of you have seen this, but thought I would post it up again.

7 in total. We went out this morning, had my buddy Alan (the one in the pic) and two others in the blind. Absolutely nothing would come in. First time in years I have had a robo on the water, and I really think it was flairing them. We had lots of birds about 10 min before sunlight, and generally they will come into the decoys and sit, but this time with the robo on they flew on by. At shooting hours, NOTHING was even thinking about flying low. There was probably 10,000 ducks flew over us, but they were way high and on their way west.

Anyway, after about two hours of not shooting, we went to eat. The other two took off for other things and Alan and I went jumping. We have a small creek right at the bottom of some corn fields (corn is still standing). We walked about a mile section of it and ended up with 5 green heads. Hit six and one got away. Still feel bad about that.

After that, we went back down to the river where my blind is at. There were lots of ducks sitting around up river from the property boundary, but nothing that we say on our side. Trick, though, is that we have an island in the middle of the river, and on the other side there is generally a bunch of ducks. I didn't have my waders on, so Alan walked over there. Sure enough, two jumped up and he drilled both of them.

We try very hard to not shoot susies but some times it happens. When jumping, especially when you can get right up to the bank without being seen and the creek is wide enough that I can almost jump it, it is really easy to spot green.

Nice job, guys.

A little robo tip for you - I've heard it helps, but can't swear to it personally. A duck's eyesight is better in low-light conditions, so on overcast days, the white flashing of the robo's wings is more likely to flare them. A solution I have heard of is to take an old pair of nylons, and cut "sleeves" to stretch over the wings of your robo, dulling the white undersides. As I've said, this is something I've heard - I've never tested the theory myself.

Might have to try that, Ken, thanks for the tip.

Also, an update on today. We went to the creek that we did the jumping on yesterday and tried to setup and decoy. Man was that a waist of time. We got one duck that was more of a pass shoot then a decoying thing, and then two that we jumped further up the creek. Unfortunately, the one that Alan shot today was a Susie, but the other two were green. Still, 9/10 for green heads isn't bad odds. I mean, a 90% is an A at the college I go to.

Nice job Matt!

We all aim for green, but you are right, sometimes a hen finds its way into the bag. So far I have collected two hen mallards this season and no green, so you are ahead of me. I have been shooting mostly gads and wigs mixed in with teal so far this season. I have heard that the green heads have made more of an appearance lately though. Too bad deer season opens this weekend.
