building a pit |
|
I got a spot I want to put a pit. The water moves up and down all year. Where I want this pit. the wat can get up to 6in than the next day itll be dry. What can I make this pit out of to not spend a fortune. as of right now I got like 100 bucks. I seen stuff like a cattle trough or septic tanks. but I want this thing to be right on this point that you see in the left side of the pick. And the water is up. When its dry its down about 10- 20 ft from shore. I had a blind on the shore in the weeds but when it was dry that 20ft killed us when the birds land on the outs of the dekes.
Well photobucket is down so I cant get the pic but This blind has to be big enough for 4 guys and a dog plus a heater. This is in IL itll be cold and I have permission to run an elect. pump out there to keep open water. Also I need to put in some corn or some food out there. I thought the water would go back down but it hasnt its 6in deep, How would you guys go about plantin food in there.

Get those pictures posted up and maybe i can help. We built a pit last year and are building another this year so we know what modifications we are going to make. $100 is pretty cheap, i'm thinking $100 wont even get you the rubber lining to keep the water out.

It sounds to me like you are going to need some way to control the water level before you get too far with anything else. This included planting crops. Usually what needs to happen is the water needs to be drained so that you can grow your crops, then once they are harvested, you can flood the area. Definitely need to check with your DNR or Game and Parks to determine if it is okay to do that first. Some states don't allow that.
As far as the blind goes, I think it should be fairly easy to get a pit blind in there, but I don't know if $100 would cut it. Are you looking at building/pouring your pit blind, or are you buying a pre-fab?

I can get all the scrap lumber I want. And this is a lake I cant control the water at all. Heres a pic of a blind someone else built 2 yrs ago. This is 30 ft from shore. The water was that low. I have to keep this as cheap as possible. I actually shot agoose that fell in that thing. And it worked awesome with sleepers ontop of it.
This what it looked like most of the season.
Now the water is up and this is the sand bar at a distance.
This is where I want to plant somethin the pic was taken in sept now its got 10in of water. and theres an acre here and then theres about 2 acres on another part of the lake that does the same.
i know Ill have to wait till the water goes down to get a blind in there. So I should have some more money by then. but ideas would really be aprecaited. If I can get an idea of what Im goin to do out there I can start little by little. With as far as plantin I talked with the dnr and can plant whatever I want as long as I dont spread the seeds 10 days pior to the season. I would like to get some stuff in there now for sept teal and plant somethin again in sept for our opener in late oct.

Is this a private lake or public? It will make a HUGE difference on what can be planted, there are a pile of rules on what can be planted and how and when it is harvested on public lands in Illinois.

Too bad you didn't do this a few years ago, the DNR had grants available to help owners of mine property, but now thanks to the (wonderful governor ) the Illinois DNR has next to no funding!!!!! But that happens when your job is in Springfield and you need to take the state jet to get there because you live in Chicago, doesn't leave much money for important stuff like natural resources! Sorry to get off track just needed to vent for a second. By the way if your a poacher Illinois is the place to be, 2 Conservation Police Officers per district, almost no funding for fuel, equipment budget cut in half, along with vehicle maintenance repair allowance that's if the govenor gets his budget, however the Chicago Parks and Rec. district will be getting a work over this year, hmmmm. Must be nice. Again sorry to vent.

Livingston county hasnt had a dnr in 5 yrs but we got stopped this yr by a new guy he said he dont get paid nothin. And as far as poachin this is the wrong state to do it in. The cops have been runin the dnr program and dont $#@!. You go down by pike county and they fly around in helli and planes wit info red. beleive me I got stooped by them @#$%^&%$#@. They had a mounted deer that was robotic. My buddy wanted to shoot it. thak god we didnt. It was the biggest damn deer I ever saw. But we got stopped a few miles away and they searched the truck because we stopped and checked it out. And we were in the woods and I asked the dnr how they found us He pionted in the sky. And said therres nowhere you can go.
