Anyone know anything about chessie retrievers? Ive got a chance to buy a pretty good one for decent money. Should I go for it?

First of all they are very loyal to one person! Its the hardest working dog I have ever had the chance of hunting with. I have heard that they are not the best around children, but do not know for sure! If I had the chance I would get it, but thats just me!

Thanks fellas. Well, its not close to me at this point but the owner of the litter said she would meet me halfway. Which would make it about a 2-3 hour round trip, not too bad. They had about eight or nine if I remember right to start with and were asking $600 to start with about a month or so ago when I first talked to them. I decided that was out of my budget for this year and passed. I told them to keep me in mind for the next litter. Today she e-mailed me and told me they had four females left and had dropped the price to five hundred. I told the woman that my cash flo sucked this time of year since I'm in construction and farming and said I couldn't go over $250 and she said that money was not their main concern that a quality home with plenty of room and water and hunting for the pup was the main thing. I said that wouldn't be a problem as I have fifteen ponds on 250 acres of farm and plenty of access to duck lakes I have built over the last fifteen years.
She seemed pretty happy at the sound of that and accepted my offer of $250 for my pick of one of the four females she has left. She sent me the pedigrees of the sire and damm both of wich they own, and the health certs. They are all dark brown and two are big boned and two are not she said. I'm single without kids so thats not really a problem, right now at least.
What do you think.

I want one of them. I have been looking for a chessie to start training. We had one before I was born and when I was growing up and it kept me out of trouble a lot. That dog was basically my babysitter from the time I was 3 on. I love them. I have heard that they can be a solitary animal, but ours were great. Now I can't seem to find a breeder in the area that has them.

Well, these are a bit far from you but she still has some left. Also I didn't see any titles in the pedigree but I'm not real good with stuff like that. I don't know that it matters to me. I bought my weim second hand from a girl who got divorced and couldn't keep her for $100 and didn't even see anything but the registration papers. I trained her and WOW! what a hunter. Maybe I just got super lucky with her, but I'm pretty handy with dogs and animals.

Birdman,
I totally agree with you about the paperwork. I have a mixed breed lab I hunted with for 15 years, I had to retire her last year and she is the best hunting dog I have had. The pup I have now has papers and all that good stuff, hope he turns out to be as good as my girl was.

I have a lab chessie mix, 1/2 and 1/2, he is 3 years old. Best huntin dog ive had, very willing to please. Does not like to listen to wife and kids. Put his training collar on him and show him that you have the remote. You cannot make him do something wrong.Very smart.

Laughing Laughing Laughing That sounds like my weim. She deff. knows what that remote does. and as log as she even just has the collar on, she won't ever challenge my authority. She doesn't do that when we're hunting anyway, but she does from time to time when we're just in the yard playing or training.

Well, I didn't get my chessie. Yeah, I'm a little disgruntled right now. Just too much goin on for a puppy.
These people were real accomodating though and their dogs look good, If anyone here's interested I'd be glad to pass their info along. I think she said they have five females left and their at a fair price.

First of all I no expert with chessies. Getting me one as well in June. What I do know with all dogs is that you need to socialize them with every one. Get them around other dogs and different people and teach them to take orders from others that are in your life. Socialize them when they are young, and you be the alpha dog in the pack and they should be fine.
