Coon Hounds? |
|
Just curious if anyone here coon hunts with dogs as well as with traps. Also wondered, if so, what kinds of dogs do you use/like for that purpose?

I do trap coon but I have only been on one coon hunt. I respect those that do hunt them but that is WAY to much running around in the woods for my overweight out of shape old a**. Thats a young persons sport.

Thanks Pintal. Thats funny! Trapping is more effective here on my property to control populations anyway. But I'm sure there's a few people who enjoy huntin'en with dogs as a sport as well. My family on both sides have coon hunted with hounds for generations. I never picked up the sport myself, but can deff. see the attraction to it.

My grandfather coon hunted and both my uncles and dad still do, it is great to watch the dogs work and fun but just not for me.

Yep, Pintail nailed it, me neither. I guess with everything else I'm into, staying up until the wee hours of the morning chasing dogs and coons with a light and rifle in the cold, just didn't appeal to me enough to do it on a regular basis.

Yet staying up all night because you cant sleep. Waking up at the wee hours of the morning. Walking a 1/2 miles in waders loaded down with gear in the dark. Then standing all day. That appeals to you.

I assume your talking about duck hunting? No wonder your so danged skinny, your doin it all wrong. I sleep just fine till the alarm goes off at about 4am. I get up,clean up, gatherup and its a thirty minute drive to my furthest ducklake. From there, I park the truck, unload the atv/gear, drive about five minutes around the levees ( that I built) to a blind for me and atv. Throw out some dekes, if needed, and shoot till I get my limit. Back to the truck, home, and spend the rest of the day plukin feathers, cokin birds and eatin them. It's the eatin birds part that really appeals to me, never took to coon too well.

Well thats great for you guys. But its kinda good i don't have a son since im only 15. Well, this year we are going to build a shed on our place so we will have it even better. Go out friday night after school and put out the decoys. Go to bed (hopefully) Then wake up, drive the 6 wheeler to the field and jump in the "heated" pit. That sounds better to me.

For me, we hunt about 40 yards from my grandpas little cabin. It is about a 3 min ride from my house, and we are able to leave the decoys in the blind when I am not hunting. Ducks start flying about 6:00 at the end of season, so I have to wake up by 5:30. Get out there, toss the decoys, go up to the cabin to make some coffee and a breakfast burrito, and when it gets shooting hours we jump the ducks that landed in the decoys. The blind is big enough that both the dog and I have dog beds to sleep on (don't laugh they are comfortable). If nothing flies, I take a nap.
